How to gain more out of your education: The Degree-Focused Mindset vs. Experience-Focused Mindset
How to gain more out of your education: The Degree-Focused Mindset vs. Experience-Focused Mindset

Ryan Lewis, BSc
I believe that a good education is more than what is learned in the classroom. To me it is about the experience that one gains during their studies. It is important to approach your education with an experience-focused mindset instead of a degree-focused one in which the primary belief is that having a degree and the best GPA of your graduating class will automatically land you the best job offers or opportunities upon graduation. What you need to be aware of is that GPA is not the most important thing that employers today are looking for when hiring new graduates. Instead, what they are looking for are people with great communication skills, integrity, interpersonal skills and job-related experience just to name a few. This is the experience-focused mindset.
Students who take this approach to their education are the ones who make the most of it and simply enjoy the time spent earning their degree. They are more involved, proactive and do things such as join or run student clubs, attend conferences, volunteer abroad, work/study abroad, etc. so that they can gain some of the valuable skills, knowledge and competencies that will help them become better professionals once they start working in their field. In addition, these experiences help them to have a clearer vision that would not only make it easier for them to become successful in the workforce, but do so faster since they will have a mental roadmap to guide them on their journey.
So get involved if you are not doing so already. Be more hands-on when it comes to your education and start seeking out the experiences that will allow you to gain the competencies that employers today are seeking in graduates. Make your time spent earning your degree and one of the best investments of your life.
